Apple only picks a select few apps to show off during their events, and you know they want apps that show off their latest hardware. Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy was one game they showed off during the new iPad event, and it’s a universal app that also has iPad retina optimized graphics. It’s an aerial combat game in the vein of Namco’s Ace Combat series, but made for iOS, and is similar to MetalStorm: Wingman, F.A.S.T., H.A.W.K. Top Gun, and more. Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy is absolutely bursting with game modes highlighted by the in-depth single player campaign with 10 lengthy missions, and comic cut scenes.

Beyond the campaign, there are also dogfight missions, survival, free for all, team death match, defend the base, and capture the flag. If that wasn’t enough, there’s online multiplayer as well with the same single player modes above, but with online opponents. You can connect with friends or play random opponents, and you can also set up specific rooms, or jump into quick matches. The one play is super smooth, and there’s no difference in terms of playback and speed whether you’re online or playing solo.

The genre isn’t always inviting, but Namco has done a great job in making the style accessible to all players. There are four different control options for either tilt or touch pad in either casual or advanced set-ups letting all players find what suits them. No matter which mode I tried, they all felt so intuitive, and all allowed me to simply focus on the action. The gameplay is packed with action whether you’re in the campaign with various missions, dogfighting with friends or bots. The graphical design is truly remarkable on the new iPad with so much detail in your ship, on land, in the sea, and even the lighting effects in the sky. It looks especially great on the new iPad, but ain’t too shabby on the iPhone 4S, for example.

Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy ($4.99, iPad) is quite simply the supreme aerial combat game in the App Store by opening the genre to all, and providing so much to enjoy. The game provides such immersion with the smooth detail on the 9.7” retina display, and there’s also 1080P Airplay Mirroring for a true console experience. Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy is a must buy that looks beautiful, but plays even better to make for a top flight iOS experience.
