We first heard about Fieldrunners 2 a couple of weeks back, and got a few screenshots. At E3, we got to see the sequel in action, and get a little bit of hands-on time ourselves. The game is quite honestly better than any hype that can be generated, and it was amazing to see in action. There are all new deluxe levels to play with six different types of game modes including sudden death, traditional, and puzzle. Every single one of the levels is intricately designed and balanced for all types of potential players.
The big highlight is the amount of back-end work done to the Fieldrunner AI so that the units are cognizant of one another, and it allows for a whole new swarm mentality. There are also levels with tunnels and hills allowing you to play open field and fixed path tower defense in one level. There’s also new overloads of action with tons of Fieldrunners on screen, and yet you still have the option to pause and place & upgrade towers in the traditional Fieldrunners style. The varying worlds have their own special tiles including heat tiles in the lava world, and new city and carnival styles.
The graphics are obviously amazing as well, from the great art style to the various death animations. The first Fieldrunners set the standard for tower defense in 2008, and there hasn’t been much innovation in the genre since. That officially changes with Fieldrunners 2, and it really puts the current top tier tower defense games to shame. Subatomic Studios has done an amazing job with so much work on the backend, while providing hours and hours of content on the front end that’s a result of developing the game with a console mentality.
Fieldrunners 2 was the best game we saw at E3, and it’s expected to launch in the next month barring any setbacks. This is one of the most advanced and ambitious iOS titles to date, and we can’t wait to put it to the test.
